My thoughts on Painter's 1/2.... I'm confident I could DO it.  But I've never ran a race where I haven't run the race distance in recent training. The longest I've run in the last month is 9-something.  I hate to go out and race when I'm not prepared.  BUT I think I may regret not taking the opportunity to run w/ you dear bloggies.  SO- should I go out and just treat it as a fun run? I'm afraid I'll sorely disappoint myself w/ my time.  Can I mentally tell myself its just a fun run and not get too bent out of shape when my time sucks? Tomorrow is the registration deadline for the reduced rate.  I will decide by tomorrow!

UUPDATE:

YOU GUYS ARE THE MOST SUPPORTIVE FRIENDS IN THE WORLD! Thanks so much for your encouragement! I'm gonna do it!!! I'm gonna run the half!! I'll register tomorrow! So who all will be there girls?! Michelle, Lybi?Marcie? Ruth? Amanda? Kim?Mik'L? I know I'm forgetting people... the more the merrier!

Sorry Michelle, didn't get my 1.5 hr. in.  BUT I did get out there for an hour.  6 miles, 9:43 average.  I forgot my IPOD- thought it would be grueling to run without it, but it was fine.  I kept my mind busy by throwing in a few strides.  I'm getting blisters?! Don't know what's that's all about? I definately need new shoes.  I'm thinking about getting some tomorrow and running long in them Saturday.  Am I crazy to attempt that? I usually wear Asics and they never give me blisters.  But current pair are Saucony's.  I thought I'd buy Asics again... So question:

Have any of you bought new shoes a week before a race? Did it work out for you?

I vote do it! And be happy with your time, whatever it is. Maybe you could pace Michelle or something!

From Christi on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:18:42

I think Michelle would be pacing me! You underestimate how inconsistent I've been lately. But it would be fun to follow Michelle & the other gals none the less! So we're on here at the same time- how are you feeling today? Are you gonna attempt a walk/jog?

From Shauna on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:24:58

I say go for it! I once ran a half marathon after a long run of 6 miles. I paced a friend who was running his first half marathon. It was my slowest time ever, but I gave myself bragging rights for completing it fairly easily with minimal training. If you go into it with the mentality that it will not be your best time, but just for fun, you will enjoy yourself! I wish I could join the bloggers for the race! Maybe next year...

From Jody on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:25:03

I would say run the 1/2 - I have run a half with my longest run being a 10 miler. I wasn't easy the last three but it was do able. You will do great and have a great time running with all the bloggies. I wish I could be there.

From Michelle on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:05:19

If it makes you feel any better my longest so far it 11 and so I'm a little nervous about the last 2.1 and I still think that you would be pacing me. I have been fairly consistant but no speed work and those 10 milers have not been easy for me! I still am looking at this as a training run to get up to 13 and I guess the way I should go at it as you mentioned a "fun" run! I was going to get up and do a long run this morning but it was around 15 when I took my daughter to school. I may still do it this afternoon if it decides to warm up! As the day goes on I get less and less motivated, hope that I do get something in!!

From MarcieJ on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 18:07:04

I totally understand what you mean by running it and not feeling prepared. Its hard to mentally overcome that and just do it. I think its probably good to do races not totally prepared 1. it makes you tougher cuz you have to work a little harder 2. it makes you want to train better for the next one!!!! I think you should go for it, esp so I can see your smiling face at the finish line!

From Michelle on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 19:59:24

Well, hope you got the run in, thanks for getting me out today! May not have even made it if you wouldn't have given me a little nudge. Gotta love this blog!!

I say go for it!!! Mentally prepare yourself to go have a good time and do just that. I think you will surprise yourself at how well you do. Good luck!

Christi, you have been training! It's not like you haven't done anything since St. George. You've run around 300 miles sice St. George! And you've completed this distance many times. Get a good race plan, grab a friend, and you'll do great! Enjoy it. Enjoy the race atmosphere--all the excitement.

9 miles or 13 miles. It's not that different. However, be sure the decision to race is your decision.

You asked about the weather here in Iowa. It's been warmer lately--in the thrities. It has snowed twice this week, but they were mild storms. Good luck with your decision.

What an amazing group of friends you are! Thanks so much for your belief in me! You convinced me! I'm going to do it and its going to be hard- but you all made very convincing arguments. Its gonna be a blast!! So who all is doing it with me (or - hum- ahead of me, ya know- whatever!)

From Lybi on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 00:11:11

Gooo Christi! I'm so excited for you! I think I am coming, whether or not I run is the question.

From MarcieJ on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 00:18:49

I will there Christi! and on the shoes I have bought new shoes about a week in advance but I have ran in the same style and brand of shoes for years so I usually dont have a problem .Sorry I am not much help on that.

From Christi on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 00:40:34

Hey Guys- Those of you coming to St. George for Painter's- Steve Hooper has offered to host a pre race party at his house Friday night instead of Pasta Factory. I think this sounds good and will keep everyone happy. Check it out on the discussion forum and give your 2 cents. Thanks to Steve for offering!

From Jody on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:02:10

Go ahead and buy the new shoes - New shoes are better that old. I wouldn't worry about running in new shows. I wish I could be there - you will do awesome!

From andee on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:11:13

I'm so glad you decided to do it. Now I'm wishing I was running it too, so that I could meet everyone. Buy the new shoes, especially if you've already runin Asics, I think you'll be just fine. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
