The Positive:

  • Beat my time from last year on this course by over 4 minutes
  • Good weather for a race, even though cold to start, ended up perfect temp and NO real wind to contend with
  • Started at a good pace, didn't go out too fast, felt better at mile 11 than I did at Painter's, finished better
  • Miles 1-3, ran my target pace (under 8:23) felt good except for shoe issue (I'll address later)
  • Miles 8-10, my favorite part of this race, great downhill where I opened up and ran pretty well (even averaging 7:24 on mi. 9)
  • Hanging out with my runner friends & their families! They are so fun & did awesome too. FRB well represented- Steve 1st! Marcie 3rd! Sunny 2nd on her FIRST EVER 5k! Not sure of Dustin or Bill's time, but I know they rocked. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, sorry!
  • Despite the hills, I still LIKE this course- must be the scenery and wide open roads

The Negative

  • Had to pull over and fix shoe (take it off and everything) during mile 2, I had a lump- probably sand. Ate up some time, but I did seem to get it fixed.
  • Underestimated the hills! You'd think I'd remember since this was my 3rd time running this- but I really did underestimate them and on miles 4-7 and part of 11 & 12 pace suffered on hills
  • Mile 5 had to take potty break, even stand in line! Must've lost at least a couple minutes here
  • Didn't make my goal of breaking 1:50, maybe it was too ambitious?

Lessons Learned

  • Don't use running shoes for sandy hikes- dumb, I knew this, but needed a reminder- I think that was the problem with my shoe on mile 2
  • Eat better! I know how I should eat pre-race and I didn't do it- it backfired at mile 5.
  • Need to put hills & speedwork back in my training, have been neglecting those lately, probably would have helped me
  • I should have stayed and cheered for my friends getting awards, but I was there without my family and pouting over my time, so I left

Overall, glad I did it, but still peeved about not breaking at least 1:53! That's 2 races in a row that I haven't met my goal (last month, Run for Kids was a bummer too).  Don't know if my goals are too ambitious or if I'm just not training as I should. Maybe I should run Hobblecreek or some mostly downhill 1/2 to feel better...I must be due for a PR soon?

Good job on the race. I would expect you to run a good 10 mins faster at the end of the summer on Hobble creek. So keep up the training and those prs will come.

From Lybi on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 12:16:58

Yea Christi! Great job. Some things you have to remember about your time:

Painters is a short course! That in and of itself might be he 2 min. difference from your PR. (And that's not even mentioning having to stop for your shoe, and STANDING IN LINE at the porta potties.) Very possibly this was a PR effort and you deserve a huge pat on the back! You can't compare one race against another because they are just different! The important thing is that you PRed over your time on this course from last year.

Christi the GREAT! Your fitness is definitely showing if you are feeling better and better at mile 11. And what's up with that 7:24 on mile 9?! Holy smokes!

From Andi on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 13:24:32

I know that I am clueless about this stuff-but it sounds to me as if you did GREAT. Had shoe issues, and potty break and you still ran better than last year.

You ran a 7+ mile in the middle of the race. Sounds great to me. You are awesome!!

From Kim on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 13:29:18

You go girl! I wish I could have cheered you on in person! Instead you will have to accept a great big WAHOO right here on the blog! I love that your positive list is longer than your negative list! I also love hearing what you learned!

Tom and I are signed up for Hobblecreek half. I hear it fills up fast. It would be fun to have you come up and run it!

From Tom on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 13:36:35

Great job Christi! I wouldn't sweat the time much I think you did great considering the unplanned stops and the hills. Your training has been great so as long as you keep it up you'll be seeing PRs throughout the year I'm sure!!

From Shauna on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 13:45:28

Excellent job! You definitely would have met your goals without the shoe and bathroom issues. Congrats on the 7:24 miles-that's awesome! You're going to have a great summer.

From Jody on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 16:20:46

Congratulations!! 1:55 is a great time for that course, especially with your shoe and potty breaks. You should be very proud of yourself!

From MarcieJ on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 16:34:17

It was good to see you again. You are always so cute and friendly. You ran a great race, that course is TOUGH!! Most of it is uphill and although you get some steep down, it hammers your legs and then you hit the up again! So you did FABULOUS!!!!You really do rock!

From Brent on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 17:42:38

Hey, super chicka, nice race, learning something from the experience is always a plus. Ditto on the other comments, your training is setting you up for a big PR at Hobblecreek if you follow your own advice. By the way, how many guys did to dude and did you have positive road kill from mid point of the race.

I think it was a great time Christi, and it definitely would have met your expectations without the stops. You are headed for a big PR in the 1/2 and you are going to blow 4 hours out of the water in October. I think hiking in running shoes is great, but use your old ones so that you don't wear out your current training shoes. The added bonus to this is you won't have the sand issue in the race like you did. I didn't know you are doing HobbleCreek -- it will be great to see you again!

From Christi on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 21:18:25

Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate all your uplifting comments. Make me want to keep on pushing! Brent, yes I had positive road kill throughout the race so that was a confidence booster.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 22:04:59

Your mileage dropped from 180 a month in Jan/Feb to 104/129 in Mar/Apr. So you should not expect a significant breakthrough for another month or more. Also, 1:53:42 in Painters adjusted for the distance mess up makes it very close in quality to what you ran today.

If you want to see big PRs stop skipping days. Running is a very harsh sport. What most people would consider a "human" level of inconsistency translates into missing your goals and a lot of suffering in the process to make things worse.

From linda10k on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 01:51:48

I think you did an awesome job!

From Kelly on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 05:37:05

It sounds like an awesome race regardless of your feelings about the time. Any day you can finish a race and mention how much you enjoyed the course is a good day. Too many times we get focused on beating the clock and let it weight us down. Lift those eyes and soak in the experience and whatever it brings!

Well run race. Didn't let the negatives stop you from putting in a great performance.

From Dustin on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 11:33:43

Great job today, especially running so much faster than last year. In my opinion this is kind of a hard course to compare with others half's. Rolling hills, unpredictable wind, some steep downhill, these are all things that in my opinion don't make this a PR type course. I think if you continue consistent training through the summer, you should be able to have a nice PR if you choose to run Hobble Creek or even the Provo Half.

From Sunny on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 12:47:02

Great job on your race! It was good to finally meet you I know we have before but now I can put a face to you. What a fun race!

From Michelle on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 23:26:44

Sounds like you were amazing! You just keep pounding out these amazing times!!! Way to Go!!!
